The U.S. diamond market is built on bridal jewelry and H SI stones less than a carat, says a new market outlook from De Beers obtained by JCK.

The company’s surveys say the best-selling diamonds in the United States fall in the 0.5–0.99 ct. range, with H or better color and SI clarity.

The market also mostly favors bridal jewelry, with engagement ring sales outpacing other sales of other types of diamond jewelry.

Overall, the American market is likely to be “steady” in 2013, De Beers said, and while it remains the biggest diamond consumer market, its overall share of the diamond market is falling. America’s share now stands at 37 percent, versus 42 percent in 2007, and around 50 percent at the beginning of the century. The U.S. diamond market grew some 5 to 6 percent percent in 2012, as did Japan’s.

China now stands as the second biggest market, claiming 11 percent of the diamond consumer total, followed by Japan (10 percent), and India (9 percent). Last year, the Chinese market grew some 8 to 10 percent in dollar terms, while the Indian consumer market for diamonds contracted some 5 percent in dollar terms but grew 9 percent in local currency.

For 2013, the company expects growth rates to consolidate in China; positive but lower-than-average demand growth in Japan; and a better picture to emerge in India.

Other market reports:

- In India and Japan, no products emerged as strong winners, but earrings “continue to be important” in India, De Beers said, as are necklaces in Japan.

- In India and Japan, non-bridal multi-diamond rings were much more popular than in other major markets.

- Solitaire diamond products were prevalent in China, mainly for bridal occasions and wedding anniversaries.

John King, a leading authority in the characterization and color description of colored diamonds, offered a historical overview of the work the GIA laboratory has done with colored diamonds over the years at a GemFest in Tokyo on April 11. King, GIA’s quality control officer, also talked about the growing popularity of colored diamonds with the members of Japan’s gem and jewelry industry and GIA alumni who attended.

“While colored diamonds have been coveted for centuries, it wasn’t until the mid-90s that they really emerged on the mainstream jewelry market,” said King, noting that Japan is one of the world’s largest consumer markets for colored diamonds. “These rare stones were once reserved for royalty and the very wealthy, but today are more and more prevalent in the broader gem market.”

He discussed rare colors seen in the GIA lab, such as purple, pinkish orange, green and blue-green, along with unusually large treated colors, HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) treated colors, synthetics and treated synthetics. He also reviewed the new trend of pale colored diamonds, which are equivalent to F, G, H and I on the D-to-Z scale.

King has been involved in the grading of many of the world’s most famous and significant colored diamonds for the past 30 years, including the Hope Diamond, the pink Agra, the yellow Tiffany, the Incomparable, the Centenary, the Wittelsbach-Graff and those in the Smithsonian’s Splendor of Diamonds exhibition.

He highlighted some of the historically notable colored diamonds GIA has graded:

The Princie Diamond: This Fancy pink diamond, which originally belonged to the Nizam of Hyderabad in the 18th century, is believed to have come from the famous Golconda mines in India because it displays a rare orange-red fluorescence associated with Golconda-type diamonds. At 34.65 carats, it is one of the largest Fancy Intense pink diamonds ever seen by GIA.

The De Beers Diamond: Discovered at the De Beers mine in 1888, this 208.65 carat Fancy Vivid yellow diamond, VS2, was cut from 439.86 metric carats. It was displayed at the 1890 Exposition Universelle in Paris, and when put up for auction in 1982, was described as the world’s fifth largest cut diamond, though a number of larger diamonds graded by GIA have appeared in the market since.

The Bulgari Blue: Purchased from the Bulgari store in Rome in 1972, this 10.95 carat blue diamond is paired with a G VS1 9.87 carat colorless diamond in a ring.

The number of colored diamonds evaluated by the GIA laboratories has grown steadily at around 30 percent since 2010, King said. Yellow diamonds have consistently remained the most common color, followed by pink.

King highlighted some of the significant GIA-graded colored diamonds featured in recent auctions, including the Graff Pink, a 24.78 Fancy Intense pink diamond that sold for U.S. $45.6 million at Sotheby’s Geneva in November 2010. Other notable auction items included the record-breaking 5 carat Fancy Vivid Pink ($2.1 million per carat); the 6.01 carat Fancy Vivid Blue ($10.1 million); The Sun Drop, a 110.03 carat Fancy Vivid yellow ($10.9 million); and the 4.19 carat Fancy Vivid Orange ($2.9 million).

GIA regularly holds GemFests around the world, providing the latest gemological information to the public and trade. This inaugural event in Tokyo followed the December 2012 opening of the GIA gem grading laboratory there.

“It is very important for GIA to be present in such an important market as Japan not only with gem grading services, but also with the latest information from GIA’s nine laboratories and international research efforts,” said Mari Okada, executive manager of the GIA gem laboratory in Tokyo, who opened the event. “Attendees appreciated John’s information on colored diamonds and would like GIA to hold more GemFests here in the future.”

He has also written a number of articles for GIA’s award-winning quarterly journal, Gems & Gemology, most notably, “Color Grading of Colored Diamonds in the GIA Gem Trade Laboratory.”

Is the neighbor’s diamond greener?
Green diamonds are considered very rare. Their color is mainly caused by irradiation defects or very high visible green UV fluorescence.

Two different shades of green are observed: a moss-like green, which is mainly seen in gems with a yellow or a brown tint; and a neon-like green, seen in gems with a blue tint. The existence of these shades can affect the price dramatically, positively or negatively.

In this article we decided to explore the price variations of green diamonds and understand the influence of each moderator on the green body color. For this purpose, we sought assistance from the GemePrice™’s back office. Its database includes more than $10.7 million worth of GIA-certified green colored diamonds currently available on the Internet, and is updated once every minute.

Through analysis of the available data, we compared the various color moderators of the green to a pure green diamond, which we set as our baseline of 100 percent.

The results of the analysis are shown in Figure 1. According to the database, the moss-like green colors had a negative effect on the price. Green colored diamonds with yellowish or yellow moderators were priced lower than the pure green by 20 percent and 40 percent respectively. Similar results are apparent with a brownish tint, where there was a 30 percent fall from the price of the pure green color stone.

On the other hand, the neon-like green colors add a premium to the price. A small addition of a bluish tint increases the price by approximately 20 percent. If the gem possesses an even higher blue saturation – high enough to be graded as a Blue Green color – the price jumps by about 50 percent.

The last tint we analyzed was gray. Although this is a neutral tint which cannot be attributed specifically to one of the two green shades, it induces its own effect, and it is quite negative. Simply stated, a gray-tinted moderator sliced the price in half.

The results point to a very clear price structure. While yellow, brown and gray tints tend to decrease the price of the gem, blue coloration causes it to increase sharply.

The neighbor’s diamond may be greener, but is it bluish or yellowish? That’s what really counts.

The gold ring (pictured) garnered fierce and active bidding during the sale and features a pear-shaped sapphire and a diamond, set in the form of a toi et moi, that reportedly weigh just under a carat each. The auction house defined the ring as part of a collection from the Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie.

Bonaparte gave the ring to de Beauharnais on February 24, 1796 from the collection of gems of the Imperial House. The couple married March 9, shortly before Bonaparte departed to carry out plans to invade Italy. Osenat held the sale on March 24 to mark de Beauharnais’ 250 birthday.

Today I happily stumbled upon this find… silk scarves printed with photos of actual gemstones, how cool is that?

There are a few styles to choose from, below are a few of my favorites; all retail for $225.00 at cisthene.com

Malachite has been used ornamentally since the Early Dynastic period in Egypt. Carved into protective amulets and powdered for pigments in both paintings and eye cosmetics, the stone was honored among Egyptians and thought to be part of God’s physical realm. Several cultures have also linked Malachite to children – it was used as a teething stone and believed to keep evil from children and encourage a restful nights sleep. It is associated with the sign of Taurus.

Turquoise is one of the few stones to be worn by kings and common citizens alike. It still plays a vital role in the lives of traditional Navajo who rely on the stone stone’s healing and protective charms. The Apache believed that a medicine man was powerless without the stone and Middle Eastern and Tibetan cultures alike still honor Turquoise for both medicinal and ritual purposes. It the birthstone of December and linked to Sagittarius.

RAPAPORT… Sotheby’s New York annual spring auction of Magnificent Jewels on April 17 will offer 400 lots and a combined presale estimate in excess of $35 million. The centerpiece of this sale is an exceptional 74.79-carat, D, VVS1, potentially flawless, type IIa, pear-shaped diamond with a presale estimate of $9 million to $12 million.

Lisa Hubbard, the chairman of North & South America at Sotheby’s International jewelry division, said, “This truly exceptional stone exemplifies the strength of the white diamond market over the last decade. It was acquired by the present owner in 2001 for $4.3 million and today we have estimated it conservatively at $120,000 per carat. The stone has universal appeal and we anticipate that it will draw attention from both the diamond industry and discerning private collectors alike.”

Hubbard added that the upcoming auction includes a number of fresh-to-the-market pieces, such as rare colored stones from the Gould family and iconic styles including Cartier’s Tutti Frutti bracelet and panther brooch.

Highlights from the sale will be on view at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Center from April 3 to 7 before returning to New York for exhibition on April 13, alongside a selection of pieces from the upcoming Geneva auction of Magnificent Jewels & Noble Jewels.

One of the highlights, a magnificent pair (5.79 carats and 5.68 carats) of pink diamond earclips, was first sold Sotheby’s in 1987 and this lot returns with a presale esimtate of $3.5 million to $4.5 million. Sotheby’s stated that these earclips are distinguished by their classic pear-shaped diamond pendants, an exquisite pair of pink diamonds that are particularly rare today as they were cut prior to the modified cuts being introduced to the market. Another highlight comes from the estate of Lynn Wolfson, a 21.46 carat, D, internally flawless, type IIa, emerald-cut diamond ring with a presale estimate of $2.5 million to $3.5 million.

Sotheby’s will also auction six jewels from the Gould family collection, many pieces of which were acquired in the first half of the 20th century, including a 22.48 carat emerald and diamond brooch, a 15.23 carat emerald and diamond ring and a 31.34 carat sapphire and diamond ring.

From G&G: Orange Diamond with Unusual Color Origin

GIA recently examined a rare orange diamond that demonstrated the complexity of diamond color origin. Diamonds with an orange bodycolor are usually caused by an absorption band centered at approximately 480 nm or by a high concentration of isolated nitrogen. Meanwhile, it is well known that the 550 nm absorption band often introduces pink to red colors.

Physical models of these two optical centers have not been resolved yet. The laboratory in New York recently examined an orange diamond whose color was attributed mainly to the 550 nm absorption band. This 1.53 ct heart-shaped diamond (6.84 × 7.76 × 3.88 mm) was color graded as Fancy Intense pinkish orange. Color was distributed evenly throughout the stone, which was very clean and showed no internal features under the microscope.

The absorption spectrum in the infrared region revealed that it was a regular type IIa diamond, with no nitrogen- or hydrogen-related absorptions. In the UV-Vis region it showed a broad absorption band centered at approximately 550 nm and its corresponding band at about 390 nm, absorption features typical of natural type IIa pink diamonds. From the optical centers detected, we would not expect this diamond to show a dominant orange bodycolor. The reason for this discrepancy is not fully understood.

Archduke Diamond Sets Price Record

Elizabeth Taylor, move over for Archduke Joseph.

The 76.02 ct type IIa, Golcanda diamond, which belonged to the Archduke of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, brought $21.5 million Nov. 13 at Christie’s Geneva auction. The diamond, a GIA-graded diamond D-If, achieved a record per-carat price of $282,545. Elizabeth Taylor’s diamond, which sold last December, brought $265,697 per carat.

The buyer of the famed Archduke diamond wished to remain anonymous.

The history of the Archduke diamond is obscure, but it is believed to have come from India’s Golcanda mine, which produced many legendary diamonds before the 19th Century. Golcanda was a major source of Type IIa diamonds that are often more “limpid” than Type I stones, which contain trace amounts of nitrogen, a yellowing agent.

The following day, Laurence Graff paid nearly $11 million at Sotheby’s for a 10.48 ct Fancy Deep blue briolette cut diamond, also graded by GIA.

The Christie’s auction had 19 lots that drew bids topping $1 million. They included a 3.33 ct. fancy intense blue GIA-graded diamond that a European dealer bought for $2.47 million and a pair of Burmese ruby ear pendants (7.94 and 7.22 cts) set by Bulgari, that brought $2.1 million from an American dealer. In addition, a British jeweler purchased a 60.44 ct Ceylon sapphire for $1.86 million.

MARKET: De Beers Diamond Trading Company confirmed at the just-concluded November sight that the allocations through the first quarter of 2013 will be “limited.” The Nov. 2-8 sight was fairly small, $480 million, with relatively stable prices. De Beers reportedly did not fully allocate its Intention-to-Offer (ITO) supplies it was contracted to deliver to clients and warned that this will remain the case for months to come.

Alrosa, the largest rough source by volume, lowered prices an average of 6% to 8% at its November sale. Unlike other diamond mining companies, Alrosa does not curtail mining activities during soft markets, but sells what it believes the market cannot absorb to the government stockpile. No details yet on how much Alrosa sold into the market and what was reserved for the stockpile.

The diamond cutting industry is still grappling with three related issues: liquidity, high inventories at the wholesale level, and low (or no) profits from manufacturing rough. Adding to that are concerns that the destruction from Hurricane Sandy on the East Coast may take a large bite out of jewelry sales in the U.S. Forecasters predicted a decent season for diamond jewelry (roughly +4% real increases), but with many homes and businesses suffering from flood damage, much of that money may go to replacing electronics and home furnishings ruined by the storm.

The just-concluded Zimbabwe International Diamond Conference apparently spelled the end of the effort by the U.S. chair to change the goals of the Kimberley Process to include human rights in considering whether or not to embargo diamonds from producer countries. Delegates blamed U.S. Kimberley Process chair Gillian Milovanovic for the continuing sanctions on Zimbabwe diamonds that ban their import to the U.S.

Milovanovic addressed the conference, calling for widening the definition of conflict diamonds, but said she was not involved in the sanctions decision.

Some members of the diamond industry also backed removal of the sanctions, which Zimbabwe’s mining minister Olbert Mpofu claimed cost the country $30 million each year.

“The Impossible” nominee Naomi Watts wore 20-carat platinum and diamond drop earrings and a platinum and diamond bracelet ($1.5 million total) with her gunmetal sequined Armani. Charlize Theron’s vintage Harry Winston platinum and diamond bracelets totaled more than 100 carats added the right amount of luxe to her divine Christian Dior.

Although “Les Miserables” winner Anne Hathaway’s Prada dress didn’t show off her Tiffany & Co. diamond and platinum “Corsage” neckace to its best advantage, the $485,000 piece was still beautiful.

There were quite a few gorgeous gold pieces on the red carpet: “Zero Dark Thirty” star Jessica Chastain wore a vintage Harry Winston diamond and gold bracelet that coordinated with her bronze Armani gown, while Samantha Barks of “Les Miserables” used her low-cut Valentino to show off a House of Waris for Forevermark pendant in yellow gold with an oval Forevermark diamond. Best bracelet? “Skyfall”‘s Naomie Harris’ “Sunrise” bracelet in 18 karat gold with citrines and diamonds.
